DIFFA 2012

This week, we had the pleasure of attending the cocktail benefit for the sneak preview of DIFFA’s 2012 “Dining by Design” show, in which designers and companies design dining rooms to benefit AIDS research.  Sponsored by Architectural Digest, this monday will be a special dinner and silent auction for charity (but the show is open for viewing all weekend!).  I’m a big believer of using one’s talents and passions to reach out to others, so this event is something I try to participate in each year by donating an art piece to be auctioned.

I hope some of you were able to make it to the show- for the rest of you, here are some of the highlights, and a few pics from the party!

The opening preview and cocktail party was a success! There were beautiful people, gorgeous displays, tasty food, and very importantly, an open bar…

Image

This was one of our favorite tables- it felt simple, peaceful and serene, while keeping a unique flair.  It’d be the perfect setting for a breezy summer evening dinner.

This table kept a fairly simple design with a really unusual organic-looking rubber rope centerpiece- which was unexpectedly cool.

The designer covered everything in plastic wrap, and made these cool saran-wrap sculptures to enclose the space in.  What I like to call the “Dexter” style (one of my favorite tv shows)!

This is a shot from the “Dead Icons” table, with place settings for famous late- personas.  This is Andy Warhol’s seat.  Included were Liz Taylor (diamonds and liquor), Farrah Fawcett (with her red bathingsuit draped on the seat), Michael Jackson (stuffed Bubbles the monkey in his seat), Freddie Mercury (British flag pillow), and Hiroshige (Japanese garden stool seat), and several others.  It was a very thoughtfully-arranged table!

This is Jonathan Adler’s, of course!

This one stood out in a very dramatic way, and was definitely one of the coolest (and most unique) tables there.  Love the Op Art style!

This is an incredible Baccarat chandelier (with an incredible price tag).  The walls are covered in living plants!

A whimsical Marimekko table.

This was a really neat idea- a table covered in melted candle wax, with the candles embedded in it.  Watch out for hot plates, though!

A super-glam setting- one can never have enough gold, shine and sparkle…

Image

Speaking of sparkle, here is the “XO” art piece we made to donate for the silent auction!  DIFFA did an amazing job of displaying it.

A really fun and amusing table, with fantastical layered screens made from a laser cutter.

A designer constructed an entire treehouse deck for their dining room, whoever gets to sit there on monday will be quite lucky!

All in all, we had a great night checking out this year’s DIFFA show, and had some great conversations, too!
